Saigon Raiders Club

After last weeks 5-3 defeat to a potent Japan FC side you would have been forgiven for thinking that the Raiders would stroll through this game seeing as though as the phrase goes ‘they had nothing to play for’. Pat Catzrev had different ideas ‘not on my watch’ uttered the defiant and folically challenged North American who was looking to close out his first season in charge with a resounding win. And lo and behold he got it.

The Raiders reverted back to their tried tested and loosely trusted formation of 4-2- 3-1 and it worked like a charm albeit they took a while to get going but when they got going they went. The sun burned and so the Raiders were also in red hot form. The first goal came through same patient build up through the middle with Ngolo Kante Sipho Ncube combining well with Michael Owen to slide Hoggy in like a… too easy. To put Hoggy through to open the scoring with a well taken finish. Raiders midfielder Mike Stanbrook’s sigh of relief could be hear from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An as he realized he wouldn’t have to do too much running after a night on the rice wine and Saigon reds at Karaoke.

Things were looking up for the Raiders but they had to ride a few quiet moments at the back as Nam An’s number 20 kept on finding potentially piercing balls over the top to his strikers who…managed to get onto the end of none of them. Within a few minutes of riding the pressure the Raiders had their second another well taken goal by a player whose name escapes this hazy minded journalist.

A quick fire third and fourth came soon after. One of them scored by a player whose name again is on the tip of my tongue. The Raiders faithful fans were in jubilant mood and Luke McDonnell’s father could be heard hooting and hollering much to his son’s delight. The Raiders endured a bit of a lull until their fifth goal hit the back of the net and the fans lifted their heads from their phones, beers and whatever else they were doing.

Finally a goal this reporter does remember. The sixth goal was a thing of both luck and beauty. The ball dropped to German Stalwart Daniel er… German and he cannoned it into the top right corner. The Raider’s fans went wild for it. And so there you have it folks the Raiders ended the season 6-0 winners against Nam An FC. Daniel German had this to say ‘Vell I put ze tape on my nipples and got ready to go on a make a difference to ze game. I saw ze ball dropping and svung my foot at it and zere ve go!

Goalkeeper Mirko also added ‘The referees this season Ah! Svacheem!’. Pat finished off the round of interviews by saying ‘I ’. True words indeed spoken by the Raider’s players. Until next season ladies and gentleman.

Regards
